The health benefits of a vegetarian diet are the focus of the Vegetarian Society of Ireland's (VSI's) celebration of World Vegetarian Day in Cultivate, Temple Bar, Dublin on Saturday, 11am-5pm.
Since heart disease and some cancers are associated with high-fat, low-fibre diets, the VSI point out that a vegetarian diet is naturally low fat (assuming you're not using lots of plant oils in cooking or dressings) and high in fibre due to larger quantities of vegetables and fruit. Vegetarians, according to the VSI, also suffer from less constipation and piles and are less lightly to be overweight than their meat-eating companions.
