A son of Kerry South TD Jackie Healy-Rae was released from hospital today after being injured in a row with a neighbour.

Independent councillor Danny Healy-Rae was hurt in the back and face after the altercation on Saturday, believed to have been a dispute over land.

His brother Michael said Danny was discharged from Kerry General Hospital and would now be recuperating at home. “We’re glad that he’s home,” he said.

“Unfortunately he missed a council meeting today. He was unable to attend because of the fact that he was in hospital. It is the first time that any of usmissed a council meeting. We hope that he will make a quick recovery.”

Gardai said they are investigating the incident, which took place at near the Kilgarvan GAA grounds at Fossa, Kilgarvan, Co Kerry, at about 1.20pm on Saturday.

The other man was also brought to hospital. He was treated for his injuries and later discharged.

A publican and plant hire operator, whose company is regularly among the highest-earning plant-hire contractors to Kerry County Council, Danny Healy-Rae is a hugely popular figure on the council.

He topped the poll in the Killarney electoral area in 2009, some 603 votes above the quota, and ahead of Fianna Fáil, other strong independents and the other parties. This was regarded as a stunning achievement in the light of boundary changes prior to the local elections that saw his own village of Kilgarvan removed from the Killarney electoral area, and much of his traditional support eroded.
