John Daly achieved his first victory since the 1995 British Open today, winning the BMW International in Munich by one shot from Ireland's Padraig Harrington.

Level on the final tee, Harrington carved his second to the par five into water. He saved par, but Daly, just off the green in two after a massive drive on the 568-yard hole, chipped to two feet and holed the putt to equal the European tour record at 27 under par.

He scored a closing 66 to Harrington's 68. Daly has been through alcohol rehabilitation and a third broken marriage since he triumphed at St Andrews, but signalled a real return to form when he was third in the Scottish Open on his last trip to Europe in July.

For Harrington, one ahead overnight, it was a sixth runners-up finish of the season. He has not tasted victory since the Madrid Open last October.

Meanwhile, Phillip Price clinched the last automatic place in Europe's Ryder Cup side when Frenchman Thomas Levet and Scot Dean Robertson, both needing to win to knock him out, finished third and joint fourth respectively.

Price was at home in Wales when he heard the news, having missed the halfway cut and left the door open.

All that remained was for European captain Sam Torrance to name his second wild card this evening. Sergio Garcia was guaranteed one and the other was expected to go to Jesper Parnevik ahead of Jose Maria Olazabal.
