New Delhi - The death toll from a record-breaking heat wave sweeping parts of India reached 2,518 yesterday, the Press Trust of India (PTI) said.
PTI reported 97 more deaths overnight in the worst-affected coastal region of Orissa. A total of 1,131 casualties have been recorded so far in the eastern state since May 12th.
The heat wave, the worst in more than 50 years, pushed up the mercury in some regions in the north to almost 51 C. The heat has been accompanied by serious water and power shortages in New Delhi and elsewhere in India.
