BRITAIN: Motorists braced themselves for treacherous driving conditions last night as forecasters predicted more heavy snow and wintry weather for many parts of Britain.
Drivers were being warned to take extra care on the roads, particularly in Scotland and the north and east of England where the weather was expected to be at its worst. Gritters were out in force across motorways and major roads as forecasters warned of icy patches with heavy rain and snow showers expected early this evening and overnight.
A spokesman for AA Roadwatch said drivers in the worst hit areas such as Scotland and north Yorkshire should think carefully about whether their journey was necessary.
Bad weather had caused traffic chaos in several areas, said the spokesman, who warned that any accidents were likely to cause serious disruption.
Sunday night's heavy snowfall caused chaos on many roads, resulting in a spate of accidents and the death of a gritter driver.
Health and safety officials launched an investigation following the death of the man in Oldham, Greater Manchester, when his gritting vehicle overturned. However, the cold spell is expected to come to an end today, with much milder weather forecast for the Christmas period. - (PA)
