Gardaí have arrested a man (26) after seizing heroin with an estimated street value of €2 million in Dublin last night.
Members of the Special Detective Unit (SDU) stopped a car on the outer ring road, Clondalkin, yesterday evening and discovered over eight kilos of the drug.
The sole occupant of the car was arrested and taken to Clondalkin Garda Station for questioning. He can be held for up to a week.
A Garda spokesman said the seizure has a potential street value of €2 million, subject to an analysis.
The seizure was part of an Operation Anvil surveillance operation targeting members of a criminal gang based in west Clondalkin.
The SDU were assisted by members of the local drugs unit in Clondalkin and the Garda Air Support Unit.
The Labour Party's Dublin Mid West TD Joanna Tuffy welcomed the seizure of the drugs, which she said would have had the potential capacity to cause "immense" damage.
"While the Garda is to be congratulated on the operation, it is clear that only a small percentage of drugs are picked up and we need to do more to continue to dismantle drug dealing networks and the criminal gangs who operate them," she added.
