The Government must account for its actions to halt the conflict in the Middle East, according to Labour's spokesperson on Foreign Affairs Mr Michael D. Higgins.
Mr Higgins who has put down a Special Notice Question on the issue to the Minister for Foreign Affairs said today that the State must redouble its efforts on both an EU and UN level to bring the latest spate of violence to an end.
He said the EU, as Israel's largest trading partner, has a "huge degree of moral and economic weight" and that influence must be brought to bear to bring an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands. "This is the first step towards restoring peace to the Middle East, and it must happen without delay," Mr Higgins said.
Mr Higgins is due to raise the emergency Dáil question later this evening.
