THE SEVERE winds experienced throughout Thursday and yesterday should abate over the weekend but heavy rain could lead to some localised flooding, according to Met Éireann.
The windy conditions prevented some aircraft from landing at Cork airport yesterday, with two flights having to be diverted to Shannon airport.
While the winds at Shannon reached similar strengths during the afternoon, the south westerlies blew down the runway. In Cork, however, the winds blew across the runway creating dangerous crosswinds.
In Galway, the weather caused a truck to overturn in the east of the county.
The truck was travelling on the NI8, Carnmore to Claregalway road, when it was forced off the road. No one was injured in the incident.
While the winds should slacken from this morning, the rain that fell in the northwest of the country is due to spread southwards.
Some areas in Munster and Leinster in particular may be susceptible to flooding.
Due to a relatively dry January, water levels are not very high and therefore generalised flooding is unlikely, according to Met Éireann.
Met Éireann is also warning the public about the possibility of frost today and tomorrow.
Rain showers are expected and in between showers, temperatures may drop to very low levels, causing frosty conditions in some areas.
There is also a chance of localised flooding in western areas caused by the combination of heavy rainfall and high tides.
The Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre did not report any accidents, saying potential sea-goers were probably heeding warnings and choosing to stay in harbour on account of the weather.
While it said that ferries did sail yesterday, along with most freighters and merchant ships, some vessels were being sheltered, with fishing boats in particular taking account of the weather warnings.
The centre has three monitoring stations, located in Dublin, Malin Head, Co Donegal and Valentia Island, Co Kerry.
