Mr Paul Hill, a former Guildford Four prisoner, today said he would join a delegation of politicians travelling to Colombia at the end of this month to view the resumption of the trial of the Colombia Three.
Mr Hill who was wrongly convicted of an IRA bombing in England in 1974 said: "As a victim of an unfair trial I want to do everything to ensure that the same thing does not happen to these three Irishmen as happened to me".
Along with three others, Mr Hill spent 15 years in prison before the Old Bailey Court of Appeal in 1989 overturned the convictions as miscarriages of justice. The four were awarded compensation.
Mr Hill will join Fianna Fail Senator Mary White, Sinn Fein's Mr Sean Crowe and Independent TD, Mr Finian McGrath who have already committed to monitoring the trial. Two other politicians have pulled out of the delegation.
The delegation is expected to meet senior representatives of the Colombian Government, the prosecution and defence and international human rights agencies including the UN. They will also visit the accused in the El Modelo Jail, Bogota.
Mr Hill said as someone who had worked with Amnesty International for several years "I have been disturbed by their reports on Colombia. In particular I share their concerns on the judicial process".
