Eighty homes  were evacuated last night following the discovery of a suspicious vehicle outside Weavershill Courthouse in Belfast.

A PSNI spokeswoman said some elderly residents had to be assisted by the ambulance service.

Belfast City Council opened the Ligoniel community centre for residents who could not find alternative accommodation.

A British army bomb squad carried out at least two controlled explosions on the car and the alert has now ended.

The Ligoniel Road, which was closed to traffic in both directions, has now reopened.
