A Sinn Fein Assembly member, Mr Gerry Kelly, said he was not optimistic about the prospects of the Belfast Agreement being implemented in full. He said his party would continue to take part in Senator George Mitchell's review of the implementation of the agreement but unionists had effectively stopped the political process.

"Unionism has moved continually to either slow it down or to bring it to a complete stop. I don't hold out a lot of hope for the review."

Senator Mitchell has returned to the US after meeting British and Irish government officials at Stormont yesterday. He will be back in Belfast on Monday for new talks with the political parties.

Meanwhile, a DUP Assembly member, the Rev William McCrea, said the Patten report on the RUC was "the ultimate betrayal" of the people of the North.
