Thirteen hostages in the Philippines have been rescued from Muslim guerrillas who have beheaded 10 captives in the last three days.

Army spokesman Major Alberto Gepilano said the 13 rescued were among 36 seized on Thursday.

About 50 members of the Abu Sayyaf raided a village on the southern island of Basilan.

A separate Abu Sayyaf unit is still holding more than 20 other hostages on another part of Basilan island.

Mr Gepilano said soldiers discovered two more beheaded hostages on Basilan, bringing to 10 the number of captives the guerrillas beheaded since they raided the southern village of Balobo.

Beheading has become a hallmark of the violent band.

At least 16 headless bodies have been discovered near Abu Sayyaf strongholds since early June.
