The number of people on the housing list in Sligo has doubled in six years - yet there are many vacant houses in the city which young families cannot afford to rent.
Figures released by Sligo Borough Council show that the number on the list continues to rise. While just under 55 per cent of those on the list are seeking one bedroom units, the remainder were families looking for two or more bedrooms. On Friday last the council said there were 1,130 people on the list.
Sinn Féin Cllr Chris McManus said the figures were "mind boggling" given that the population of Sligo was around 20,000. He said that while many on the housing list were in obviously difficult financial circumstances there were also many young couples who, while in employment, could not afford to get a mortgage.
"The Government will have to take the bull by the horns, many young people are being priced out of the market when speculators are buying two, three and more properties."
