April 1988. Following media reports, the Dail Committee of Public Accounts (PAC) questions the chairman of the Revenue Commissioners, Mr Dermot Quigley, about AIB's use of bogus non-resident accounts.
October 13th, 1998. The PAC requests the chairman of the Revenue Commissioners to attend another meeting of the committee, following further "substantial" reports in the media.
October 15th, 1998. AIB delegation, led by the group chief executive, Mr Tom Mulcahy, responds at the PAC. It contends that "the issue of bogus non-resident accounts is an industrywide problem rather than a problem specific to AIB".
The bank said the Revenue had previously agreed that there would be no retrospective liability to DIRT on wrongly classified non-resident accounts.
October 21st, 1998. The Dail asks the PAC to examine and report on the conflict between the AIB and Bank of Ireland. The PAC recommended the Comptroller and Auditor General (C & AG) was more suitably empowered to investigate.
December 16th, 1998. Following the passing of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Committees of the Houses of the Oireachtas (special provisions) Bill, the Dail requested the C & AG to investigate the matter.
