Hundreds of mourners gathered today for the private funeral of John Entwistle (57) bass player with legendary British rock group The Who.

The service at St Edward's Church in his home town of Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire was attended by hundreds of mourners, mostly friends and family members and the two remaining original members of The Who, vocalist Roger Daltrey and lead guitarist Pete Townshend.

The legendary bass player was found dead in a Las Vegas hotel room last month on the eve of a United States tour planned by the group. The cause of death, on the eve of the group's US tour, is yet to be confirmed, although it is thought he may have suffered a heart attack in his sleep.

The ceremony was broadcast through loudspeakers to well-wishers and fans gathered outside.

Flower tributes in the hearse carrying the coffin included one in the shape of a guitar and another in the shape of a champagne bottle.

Entwistle is the second original member of The Who to have died. The first, Keith Moon, died of a drugs overdose in 1978 at the age of 31.

Reverend Colin Wilson, leading the service, said Entwistle was now "reunited with Keith up there, making great music".

The ceremony was to be followed by a private cremation.

Twice married, Entwistle had one son, Christopher.
