Irish company Fyffes yesterday shipped out a third consignment of aid from Waterford Port destined for the victims of Hurricane Mitch. The food, clothes and medicine were collected at Fyffes depots around the State and filled a ship from Central America that had unloaded its cargo of bananas.
"We have shipped bananas from Honduras to Ireland and the UK for nine years. Reports from our people on the ground say people are still missing, there is absolute devastation and damage to the infrastructure. We just want to try and help the people," said Mr Gerry Cunningham, sales manager of Banana Importers of Ireland.
"Over a million pounds in aid has been sent back so far. When it arrives our people on the ground work with APSO and Concern volunteers and it goes to where it is needed," he added.
