Businessman rescues statue in Argentina
Dublin-based businessman Bill Durkin, named Mayo's Man of the Year for 2006, will rescue the bronze statue of Foxford-born Admiral William Brown which was left in Argentina because there were no funds to bring it home.
This week it emerged that one of two identical bronze statues of the founder of the Argentinian navy, commissioned to mark the 150th anniversary of Brown's death next year, was left behind in Buenos Aires last March.
"I read about the statue's plight during the week and I believe in the project and so want Foxford to have its statue.
"I think it's great to have a statue of Brown at Dublin docks and we'll have the same for Foxford," said Mr Durkin.
The other statue will be located at Sir John Rogerson's Quay, and will be formally unveiled on September 28th.
