Air strike kills family of nine in Afghanistan

KABUL -A coalition air strike destroyed a mud-brick home, killing nine people from four generations of an Afghan family during fighting between western troops and militants, Afghan officials and relatives said yesterday. WASHINGTON -Doctors found a blood clot in US vice-president Dick Cheney's left leg yesterday but he was not admitted to a hospital and will be treated with blood thinning medication, his office said.

Mr Cheney, who has a history of heart trouble, went to his doctor's office after he "experienced mild calf discomfort". - (Reuters)

Al-Qaeda claims attack in Algeria

DUBAI -An al-Qaeda wing claimed responsibility yesterday for an attack in Algeria that killed seven policemen on Sunday.

"Our [ fighters] conducted an attack on the municipal guard in Tizi Ouzou and killed a number of infidels," al-Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb said in a statement posted on a militant internet site. - (Reuters)

Colleagues query journalist's suicide

MOSCOW -Colleagues of a Russian journalist who died after falling from a fifth-floor window said yesterday that they did not believe he had committed suicide.

Ivan Safronov (51), who wrote on military affairs for the Kommersantnewspaper, was found dead outside his Moscow apartment building on Friday. - (Reuters)

Demolition of youth centre begins

COPENHAGEN -Demolition work began yesterday on a youth centre at the heart of violent street clashes between demonstrators and police in Denmark's capital last week, sparking protests in Norway.

About 150 young demonstrators gathered at the Danish embassy in Oslo to protest at the demolition, throwing stones and paint before police fired teargas to disperse them. One policeman was injured. - (Reuters)

Size of pension leads to love feud

BELGRADE -Serb police had to separate two septuagenarians fighting with a gun and an axe in a love feud over a younger woman, local media reported yesterday.

The woman, Zivkica Jankovic (52), was shot in the leg during the fracas, and more than two dozen police had to be called to stop the brawl in the southern town of Leskovac.

Radivoje Sinadinovic (77) said Ms Jankovic had been his lover but was wooed away by his neighbour Ljubisa Petkovic (78), who had bragged about the size of his pension. - (Reuters)
