Gilmore critical of housing record
Labour Party spokesman on housing Eamon Gilmore yesterday accused the Government of having a "shameful" record in the area. He said Minister of State for Housing Noel Ahern effectively admitted in the Dáil last week that 90,000 people in the State have a housing need.
The admission, he said, completely changed the official picture on housing. "Up to now Ministers have repeatedly claimed that there were 43,000 households seeking public housing.
"It is shameful that at the end of 10 years of Fianna Fáil and Progressive Democrat rule, in the best of economic times, there are 90,000 households who can not provide for their own housing needs."
