Nursing vote result likely this evening

The outcome of a ballot of up to 45,000 nurses on proposals put forward last week in an attempt to resolve the long-running nurses dispute will be known this evening, writes Eithne Donnellan, Health Correspondent.

Voting by members of the Irish Nurses' Organisation (INO) and the Psychiatric Nurses' Association (PNA) on the proposals closes at 1pm today and the ballots will then be counted at a number of centres in Cork, Limerick, Galway and Dublin.

The result is expected to be known by 5pm, at which point the executives of the unions will meet to discuss what to do next.

The result of the ballot is by no means a foregone conclusion. A union source said last night the outcome of the ballot was "far too close to call".

Ryanair to fly fans to Athens match

A number of Irish Liverpool fans, whose flights to tonight's Champions League final in Athens were cancelled, have been accommodated on a Ryanair charter which was due to take off from Dublin airport this morning.

Congestion at Athens airport was blamed for the cancellation of some charter flights to the final between Liverpool and AC Milan.

RTÉ programme wins TV award

The first programme in the RTÉ Last Judgementseries, broadcast in November, has been awarded first prize in the "documentary, news and current affairs category" at the European Television Festival of Religious Programmes in Kristiansand, Norway, writes Patsy McGarry.

Titled Celibacy, the programme caused some controversy in its making when the crew were arrested in Rome for filming on the via Conciliazione with a model dressed as a Catholic bishop. It was produced by Alan Robinson.

Death linked to epilepsy - inquest

An inquest at Dublin City Coroner's Court yesterday ruled that a 19-year-old woman who passed away in her sleep after a party died from sudden and unexpected death in epilepsy, with cocaine as a secondary factor.

The woman who suffered from epilepsy, died at her father's home in Ringsend on June 3rd last year after returning from a party at a friend's house.
