Search for woman on Shannon

Boat-owners along the Shannon have joined farmers and local people in the search for a Co Leitrim woman missing since Monday. Marie Heeran (47), Keshcarrigan, who left her home in the family car last Monday, is a diabetic who may not have her medication with her, gardaí believe.

Ms Heeran was seen on Monday in Dromod and Rooskey. Dozens of friends and relatives have joined in a search along the Shannon in this area. A helicopter and local sub aqua teams also joined in the search.

Ms Heeran was driving a red Nissan Primera, registration 96 DL 722. Sgt John O'Donnell appealed to anyone with information to contact gardaí at Carrick- on-Shannon, telephone 071 962 0021.

Johnny Adair in court in Bolton

Former Ulster Defence Association brigadier Johnny Adair has appeared at Bolton Magistrates Court, accused of the harassment of Stephen McQuaid and Kerry Thompson.

Mr Adair (41) was charged yesterday following an incident in Bolton on August 15th. William Woods from Bolton was charged in connection with the same incident.

Both men pleaded not guilty and were remanded in custody to appear at Bolton Magistrates Court on August 25th.

Man slept rough at Dublin airport

A man who had been living rough at Dublin airport after his arrival from Germany has been remanded in custody for psychiatric assessment.

Stefan Baseler (43) was charged with possession of a penknife at the terminal on July 31st.

Solicitor John O'Doherty said Mr Baseler had been "hanging around the airport living rough" when he was arrested. Following his release on bail, he had been wandering around Dublin.

Contact had been made with the German embassy and a letter on his condition was handed into court.

Judge Catherine Murphy remanded him in custody for psychiatric treatment.

€9m funding for elderly housing

The Government has announced nearly €9 million in funding for 56 units of supported accommodation for the elderly by Fold Housing Association Ltd at St Clare's, Glasnevin, Dublin.

Two new daycare facilities for the elderly will be provided as part of the overall project as well as a new health centre, which will be financed and run by the HSE. The funding also includes more than €300,000 for associated communal facilities.

Sheepdog rescued from mountain

A sheepdog has been rescued from a ridge at the summit of Ireland's highest mountain by mountaineers in Kerry. Jack had spent a week on a ledge at the top of the Devil's Ladder and had been given up for lost after chasing sheep down from a valley near the top of Corrán Tuathail. Jack's rescue was led by mountaineer and tour guide Con Moriarty.
