Boy (9) killed in accident at quarry

A nine-year-old boy died in an accident at a quarry in Co Donegal yesterday afternoon. Gardaí said he was trapped beneath a pile of rubble when an embankment collapsed on top of him.

The boy, from Annagry, Co Donegal, was the youngest in a family of four children.

He was named locally as Joseph McDevitt, son of Willie and Anne McDevitt, McDevitt oil company, Meenacrieve, Annagry.

Holidaymakers back from Cyprus

More than 360 Irish holidaymakers, who had been stranded in Cyprus since Sunday morning, arrived back in Dublin early yesterday. The group flew home on Dutch and British-registered aircraft leased for the journey by their original Cypriot carrier, Helios Airways.

A British-based spokeswoman for the company confirmed the holidaymakers arrived in Dublin on two flights yesterday. She was unable to say how many had lodged complaints seeking compensation. Many complained they had not been kept informed of developments by the airline while stranded and given inaccurate information.

Last week 121 people died in a Helios Airways flight from Cyprus to Greece.

15 injured in two separate accidents

A total of 15 people were hospitalised yesterday afternoon in two separate road traffic accidents.

In Co Louth, four cars and a lorry were involved in an accident at about 5.15pm near Ardee. According to gardaí, eight people were taken to hospital in Drogheda although none of the injuries was thought to be life-threatening.

In a two-vehicle collision in Co Sligo, seven people were hospitalised following an accident on the N17 near Collooney. The accident happened at about 2.55pm and the injured were taken to Sligo General hospital.

Women urged to be vigilant

Police in Strabane, Co Tyrone, have warned women in the town to be vigilant against attack after a woman managed to escape from two men who tried to abduct her. The PSNI said the woman in her 30s was left "traumatised" by the incident on Monday.

Case of troubled boy adjourned

The Children's Court has adjourned the case of a 14- year-old boy who has tried to kill himself three times, pending a High Court action to find him a suitable care facility. The boy has been held in custody for three months in the Finglas Child and Adolescent Centre amid fears for his safety. He is facing a charge of handling a stolen bicycle, regarding which the issue of his fitness to plead has been raised.
