Bill to prohibit nuclear tests on Irish soil
The Cabinet has approved proposals that will prohibit the carrying out of nuclear weapons tests on Irish soil.
Yesterday's Cabinet meeting approved the heads of a Bill designed to write into Irish law the contents of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which was signed by Ireland in 1996.
Cabinet members also decided that Ireland should sign an international convention on nuclear terrorism, along with 24 other EU members.
The Convention on the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism defines acts of nuclear terrorism and lists possible targets such as nuclear power plants.
Man questioned on €7.4m fraud
A Co Dublin businessman, wanted by Lincolnshire police in connection with charges alleging up to €7.4 million fraud, was arrested at his home by gardaí yesterday morning, the High Court has been told.
Mr Justice Michael Hanna remanded 61-year-old Robert Francis Stapleton, Red Gap, Rathcoole, Co Dublin, in custody until tomorrow when he is expected to make a bail application.
He was remanded on foot of a European Arrest Warrant which alleges he, with Julia Stapleton, committed fraudulent false accounting totalling more than £5 million sterling in connection with a number of leisure companies he owned in Lincolnshire during the 1970s and 1980s.
Eircom landline problem resolved
More than 6,000 customers experienced problems with their Eircom landline telephone service yesterday following a technical fault at an exchange in Dublin.
The problem arose at around 10.30am in the Ballyboden area in the southwest of the city, affecting numbers beginning with the digits, (01) 494.
A spokeswoman for Eircom said that all services had been restored.
Dundalk man dies after hit-and-run
A 21-year-old Dundalk man who was knocked down by a car that failed to stop in the early hours of last Saturday morning died in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin yesterday.
Brendan Legget was a footballer with his local Dowdallshill GFC club and worked in Moe's Bar, Park Street, Dundalk, a short distance from where he was knocked down.
A file is being prepared for the DPP.
Appointments to RTÉ Authority
The Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Noel Dempsey has appointed Emer Finnan and Joe O'Brien as members of the RTÉ Authority.
Ms Finnan is director of strategic development with the EBS Building Society.
Mr O'Brien is Agriculture and Defence Correspondent with RTÉ News and was elected by the RTÉ employees for consideration by Government as a member of the RTÉ Authority.
Fiona O'Malley to contest election
Fiona O'Malley has become the first Progressive Democrats TD to be selected for the party to contest the next general election, writes Paul Cullen.
Ms O'Malley was the only candidate to put her name forward at a party selection convention for the Dún Laoghaire/Rathdown constituency last night.
