Woman dies after SUV hits wall
A 52-year-old mother died yesterday morning when the SUV she was driving collided with a wall near Oola in Co Limerick.
The accident happened at 7.45am at Ballyvolode near Cluggain's Cross on the road to Doon.The woman was named locally last night as Margaret Hayes from Doon Road, Co Limerick.
She was travelling from Doon towards the N24 when the collision occurred.
Gardaí from Tipperary town, one ambulance and a unit of Limerick Fire Service from Cappamore in Co Limerick went to the scene. The woman was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Engine failure on flight from Knock
An investigation is to get under way into the cause of engine failure in a Ryanair jet that had taken off from Knock airport last Friday evening, writes Teresa O'Malley.
The jet was forced to make an emergency landing at Shannon airport a half an hour later.
Ryanair flight FR1292 bound for London Gatwick airport with 99 passengers and five crew on board, departed the Mayo airport at 6.42pm on Friday last and immediately after take-off developed engine failure.
The Ryanair captain reported the engine failure to Knock air traffic control and then decided to divert to Shannon airport where the flight landed safely at 7.10pm.
A spokesperson for Knock airport, Desmond O'Flynn said yesterday Knock airport is completing an incident report which will be forwarded to the Irish Aviation Authority which will be conducting an investigation into the cause of the engine failure.
A Ryanair spokesperson said the company had made alternative travel arrangements for the passengers affected by Friday's incident.
Two held in vandalism inquiry
Two youths were being questioned by gardaí last night in connection with last month's attack by vandals at Limerick's historic rugby ground, Thomond Park, writes Kathryn Hayes.
Up to €20,000 worth of damage was caused on September 14th last when hundreds of sods of turf were dug up on the main playing pitch.
The damage, which was carried out in daylight, ran the whole length of the pitch and resulted in the cancellation of a number of fixtures due to be played at the venue.
Gardaí arrested two youths in connection with the incident and they were detained for questioning yesterday at Mayorstone Garda station under Section Four of the Criminal Justice Act. The youths, aged 16 and 18, were arrested in the Moyross area of the city.
North Pole sailors back this week
The Irish sailors who have completed a circumnavigation of the North Pole are hoping to sail home to Mayo this week.
The crew were sheltering from gales in Scotland at the weekend. Several weeks ago, the crew led by Mayo skipper Jarlath Cunnane and yachtsman Paddy Barry completed their westward polar circumnavigation when they successful traversed the north-east passage. The voyage covered 6,000 miles.
