Drinks licence for hotel on gasworks site
A hotel planned for the site of the old Dublin gasworks at Sir John Rogerson's Quay successfully applied for a drinks licence in the Circuit Civil Court yesterday.
Senior counsel Constance Cassidy, for the Grand Canal Harbour Hotel Ltd, told Judge Doirbhile Flanagan the new multimillion-euro development would form part of the hub of the new Dublin Docklands development.
Ms Cassidy said the Dublin Docklands Development Authority said it would turn the area into "a world-class city quarter which will be a paragon of inner-city regeneration which will deliver a major contribution to the social and economic prosperity of Dublin and the whole of Ireland".
The 179-room hotel, to be completed by summer 2007, will form one side of Grand Canal Square.
PSNI freezes £1m worth of assets
Police in Derry yesterday froze assets worth almost £1 million during an operation against organised crime.
The assets included 12 houses, a taxi firm, a mobile shop, three bank accounts, £17,000 in cash, and two vehicles. The seizures came after a restraining order was served on two people.
About 80,000 contraband and counterfeit cigarettes were also recovered.
Houses and other premises were searched in the joint Police and Customs search operation in the Gobnascale area of Derry yesterday. There were no arrests but police inquiries are continuing. - (PA)
Stabbed man critical, but stable
A man is in a critical but stable condition in St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny, following a stabbing in the city on Thursday night.
The incident occurred at around 11pm in a flat at John's Gate. A man was arrested at the scene and is being detained at Kilkenny Garda station. It is expected that a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
