Flynn trial adjourned for second time
The trial of former trade union official and Government adviser Phil Flynn on weapons and ammunition charges has been adjourned for a second time.
Judge Ann Ryan of Dublin District Court yesterday put back the case to December 16th after hearing from senior counsel Patrick Gageby, for Mr Flynn, that he was awaiting forensic information. Mr Flynn is charged with possession of a pen-gun and mini-tear gas canisters without a certificate. He has denied any involvement.
Two men die in road accidents
Two men were killed in separate road accidents in Kildare and Offaly yesterday. A man in his 50s died when the car he was driving hit a bollard at Poplar Square, Naas. No other vehicle was involved .
A 72-year-old man died when he was struck by a vehicle at Crinkle, Birr, shortly before 6pm.
Postal talks to resume today
Talks aimed at averting a national postal strike are to resume at the Labour Court today, writes Chris Dooley.
An Post and the Communications Workers' Union have agreed to return to the court in an attempt to settle their differences, following two days of discussions at Government Buildings overseen by the National Implementation Body. It intervened last week to secure a deferral of industrial action by the CWU's 8,500 members.
Laide retrial bid to restrict media
The DPP has made an application to restrict media coverage of Dermot Laide in the run-up to his April 24th manslaughter trial.
Mr Laide (23), Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, has pleaded not guilty to the unlawful killing of teenager Brian Murphy outside the Burlington Hotel on August 31st, 2000. The application before Judge Frank O'Donnell will continue next Thursday.
O'Hare back in Portlaoise prison
The Prison service has confirmed that Dessie O'Hare has been transferred back to Portlaoise prison after he brought a mobile phone and pills back with him after temporary release from Castlerea.
He is serving a 40-year sentence for the kidnapping of Dublin dentist John O'Grady in 1988. A spokesman said O'Hare's release on licence has been put in jeopardy.
1916-21 Club annual dinner
The annual dinner of the 1916-21 Club takes place in McKee Barracks, Dublin, this evening. The club was formed to heal Civil War divisions. This year's guest speaker is Senator Labhrás Ó Murchú. Further information from Charles Murphy (01-4960753).
