Tiger boycott mars vote in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO - Sri Lankans voted in a closely fought presidential poll yesterday, seen as a referendum on how to rescue the country's faltering peace process and tsunami-hit economy, but a boycott by Tamil Tiger rebels marred the vote.

Heavily armed police carrying AK-47s guarded voting stations across the country in a two-horse race between hawkish left-wing prime minister Mahinda Rajapakse and right-wing opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, seen as far more dovish towards the rebels. - (Reuters)

Gary Glitter wanted in Vietnam

VIETNAM - Authorities in Vietnam said they were searching for disgraced pop star Gary Glitter to investigate his alleged relationship with a teenager.

Foreign ministry spokesman Le Dung said officials confirmed that Glitter (61), whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, was living in southern Vung Tau city and had applied for permanent resident status.

Glitter was convicted in Britain in 1999 for possessing child pornography, and was permanently expelled from Cambodia in 2002.

Mr Dung said authorities interviewed a 15-year-old girl whom they found in the home rented by Glitter. Glitter had left the house on November 12th. - (PA)
