Three suspected explosive devices made safe in Kildare
Three suspected explosive devices were found in Co Kildare on Sunday night. The devices were found near a bus stop at Ballinakill, Carbury, at about 7.30pm. Gardaí said the discovery was made during a planned search of the area.
An Army explosive ordnance disposal team was called to the scene. The devices, which were crude but viable, were made safe and removed for further technical examination. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.
Thousands attend Monaghan parade
Several thousand people from both sides of the Border crowded the streets of Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, yesterday for the annual May bank holiday parade.
Marching bands from the North and the Republic were joined by floats and vintage vehicles.
There were also gardaí on horseback and an appearance by Rose of Tralee contestants as well as this year's Monaghan Rose.
Former sportswriter and law firm official Liam McGrath was chief marshal and received a presentation from Castleblayney Chamber of Commerce president Patrick McFadden.
Great Blasket Island bursary
A bursary honouring the heritage of the Great Blasket Island is inviting applicants.
The €1,000 award has been established by Dr Micheál Carney (91), a Blasket islander who emigrated to the US, and his late wife Maureen Carney, who died last year.
It is confined to natives of the west Kerry Gaeltacht who are entering their third year in college and applications must be submitted to the Blasket Island Centre by June 1st each year.
The bursary is to help with books and other material.
It is to be awarded annually and is administered by Ionad an Bhlascaoid.
Three hurt in road crash in Wicklow
Three people were taken to hospital yesterday following a road traffic collision at Cronelee on the Tullow to Shillelagh road in Co Wicklow.
However, their injuries are thought to be not too serious.
The road was blocked for over an hour by the incident.
