Girls recovering after being hit by car
Two children were recovering in hospital last night from injuries received when they were knocked down by a car in Mulranny, Co Mayo, on Saturday.
The girls, aged six and 10, had been holidaying locally with their families. It is understood they are from the Dublin area.
The victims were taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar. The six-year-old sustained the more serious injuries.
Michael Holmes, a Mulranny-based member of Mayo County Council, said the accident had occurred in a part of the village where there were no footpaths.
“We have been crying out for proper footpaths for years. I met the National Roads Authority on the issue in Dublin last Wednesday and warned them a serious accident was inevitable unless footpaths were provided,” he said.
The road through Mulranny, the main access route to Achill Island, was closed for up to six hours because of the accident.
Design competition for festival pavilion
Architects and craftspeople are being invited to join forces to design a reusable pavilion for "small, intimate events" at this year's Electric Picnic festival outside Stradbally, Co Laois.
The competition, to mark Year of Craft 2011, aims to promote collaboration between the two professions and is being run jointly by the Crafts Council of Ireland and the Irish Architecture Foundation in association with Cultivate, Electric Picnic and Greencrafts.
Louise Allen, the craft council's education and innovation manager, said the "Craftitecture" competition will explore a creative partnership between architects and craftspeople.
