Supermodel to testify at war crimes trial
THE HAGUE – Model Naomi Campbell and actress Mia Farrow will be summoned to testify at former Liberian president Charles Taylor’s war crimes trial, addressing allegations that he gave the supermodel an uncut diamond at a South African reception in 1997.
The International Criminal Court granted a request by prosecutors to summon Campbell and Farrow, along with actress Carol White. – (AP)
Napoleon's hair sells for $13,000
AUCKLAND – A lock of hair cut from Napoleon Bonaparte’s head after he died has sold for US$13,000 at an auction in New Zealand.
Extra phone lines were installed for the sale to cope with a rush of international buyers. The hair was cut from the head of the former emperor a day after his death in 1821 while he was in exile on St Helena. – (Reuters)
Hurricane Alex picks up strength
MEXICO – Hurricane Alex picked up strength in the Gulf of Mexico as it headed for land yesterday, flooding parts of the Mexican coast but staying clear of oil fields.
The first named storm of the 2010 Atlantic season, Alex’s winds of 85mph bent palm trees near the port city of Matamoros across from Brownsville, Texas. –(Reuters)
