Comet-like object created in collision
CAPE CANAVERAL – Astronomers have found a comet-like object they think was created by the collision of two asteroids, similar to the rogue rock blamed for killing the dinosaurs.
The object, “P/2010 A2”, was circling about 144 million kilometres from Earth in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter when it was spotted last week by the Hubble Space Telescope. “The truth is we’re still struggling to understand what this means,” said David Jewitt of the University of California at Los Angeles. – (Reuters)
Elton and partner for Broadway play
LONDON – Elton John and his partner David Furnish are to help produce a Broadway play, Next Fall.
The play by Geoffrey Nauffts, which opens on Broadway next month, looks at the relationship between two gay men and the strain that their religious beliefs puts on them.
The pair said they were excited about Next Fall, well received during an off-Broadway run last year. As producers, it is likely that they will have put money into the show and will allow their names to be used in publicity material. – (Guardian service)
Bosnian police raid village of radical Islamists
SARAJEVO – Bosnian police raided a village which is home to followers of the radical Wahabbi branch of Islam yesterday, targeting people whom authorities suspect of destabilising the fragile Balkan country.
The operation by 600 officers in the village of Gornja Maoca was the largest since the country’s 1992-95 war, said Boris Grubesic, a spokesman for the prosecutor who ordered the swoop. “Seven people were arrested, including the local community leader Nusret Imamovic, and the police have seized some evidence, a large cache of weapons and ammunitions, as well as CDs and DVDs,” he said. – (Reuters)
