Italian PM boost as Mills verdict overturned
ROME – Italy’s highest court last night overturned a guilty verdict for British lawyer David Mills, who was accused of taking a bribe to lie in court to protect prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.
The Court of Cassation determined that the statute of limitations had expired.
The ruling is a victory for Mr Berlusconi, whose own trial on related corruption charges was put on hold pending the outcome. – (AP)
Iceland's €5bn debt talks stall
REYKJAVIK – Iceland’s finance minister said yesterday that talks with Britain and the Netherlands on repaying more than $5 billion (€3.6 billion) in debt had broken down.
“We had hoped to be able to reach a consensual resolution . . . but this has not yet been possible,” Steingrimur Sigfusson said in a statement. – (Reuters)
Two released in Turkey coup inquiry
ISTANBUL – Turkish prosecutors have released former chiefs of the country’s air force and navy after questioning them in connection with an alleged plot to topple the Islamist- rooted government, broadcasters reported.
There was no mention yesterday if the two might still face charges. – (Reuters)
