President to visit Olympics site today
President Mary McAleese, who is on a two-day visit to England, will today be given a tour of the Olympics site in London and will meet Irish companies supplying services to the multibillion- pound project.
Later, Mrs McAleese will meet members of the Irish Council for Prisoners Overseas and the Irish Chaplaincy in Britain before visiting the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith.
The President yesterday attended the London Irish/Harlequins rugby match at London Irish’s home in the Madejski Stadium in Reading, before visiting the Reading Irish Centre.
In a speech at the centre, Mrs McAleese said she had struck during her many visits to Britain how “our big Irish family keeps watch over each other”.
“I have admired its care, in particular, for those in most need of looking after.”
Woman dies after single-vehicle crash
A young woman died following a crash in Co Meath yesterday morning. The single-vehicle crash took place at about 7am at Clowanstown, Dunshaughlin.
Four people in the car were taken to hospital, where a 22-year-old woman was pronounced dead.
Nine people were taken to hospital in Galway yesterday after a collision on the Galway-Tuam road near Knockdoe. Gardaí and two units of Tuam fire brigade were called to the scene shortly before 2pm.
Gardaí in Co Kerry are appealing to the driver of a car involved in a suspected hit-and-run in which a 51-year-old pedestrian died on the outskirts of Killorglin to contact them.
Niall Collin was struck by the vehicle at about 8.30pm near the entrance to the Killorglin golf club.
Man questioned over sex assault
Gardaí in east Galway were questioning a man last night in relation to a reported burglary and sexual assault.
The alleged incident happened in the home of a woman in Ballinasloe in the early hours of Saturday morning.
A man in his 20s was arrested yesterday and was detained by gardaí under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
Screening for Irish Oscar nominees
Ireland’s Oscar nominations will be celebrated this week with a special screening of all three films up for awards.
The Irish Film Institute will show The Secret of Kells, The Doorand Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beautyon Wednesday night.
The Secret of Kells, with starring voice roles for Brendan Gleeson and Mick Lally, is one of five films up for Best Animated Feature and gets its US premiere in Boston on St Patrick's Day.
Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beautyand The Doorwere nominated in the Best Short Film categories.
