Massacre suspect held in Philippines
MANILA – Philippine security forces arrested a key suspect who has been charged over the massacre of 57 people last year, the country’s worst incident of political violence. The arrest came after he was shot by rival clan members.
Edris Kasan, who has a 200,000 pesos (€3,370) bounty for his capture, was arrested early yesterday after he was admitted to a hospital with gunshot wounds.
A police spokesman said Kasan, who has been on the run since he was charged late last year in connection with the massacre, would be moved to a military hospital. – (Reuters)
Nine killed during Kashmir protest
SRINAGAR, India – At least nine people died in Indian Kashmir yesterday in clashes between pro-independence protesters and police, officials and witnesses said.
It was the biggest death toll in a single day in the latest wave of protests in Kashmir which have strained relations between India and Pakistan.
Four people, including a girl, died from bullet injuries when police opened fire to quell a violent protest, while five others died in a blast after protesters set fire to a police station stored with explosives. At least 35 people were injured in the blast in the Pampore area on the outskirts of Srinagar. – (Reuters)
Damages for Tamil hunger striker
A Tamil refugee who went on a 23-day hunger strike in Parliament Square, in central London last year, has received an apology and almost £80,000 (€96,000) in damages from the Daily Mailand the Sunnewspapers over false allegations by them that he had secretly sustained himself during his protest with hamburgers.
Parameswaran Subramanyam (29), became the public face of the 73-day Tamil protests after he decided to stop eating in the hope of drawing the world's attention to what was happening to his people in the final stages of Sri Lanka's civil war. – ( Guardianservice)
