Crash at air show kills one, injures 20

BERLIN – At least one spectator was killed when a propeller-powered biplane ploughed into a crowd at an air show in southern Germany yesterday, police said.

A police spokesman from the city of Nuremberg said the aircraft veered off the runway into the crowd when trying to take off.

200 feared dead in Congo boat fire

KINSHASA – A riverboat loaded with passengers and fuel drums caught fire and capsized in southern Congo, and 200 people were feared dead, a survivor said yesterday.

It would be the most serious boat accident in the central African nation this year, and among the worst in Africa this year.

Fabrice Muamba, who said he was on the boat when it caught fire last night on the Kasai River, said he thought only 15 people were able to swim to safety. He said passengers began to jump overboard when the engine caught fire. – (Reuters)

Suicide bomber leaves three dead

MAKHACHKALA – At least three people were killed and 33 wounded yesterday when a suicide bomber rammed a car packed with explosives into a military camp in Russia’s southern region of Dagestan.

The bomber tried to drive a car containing about 50kg (110lb) of explosives on to a firing range where the 136th Motorised Brigade had set up camp outside Buynaksk town, west of the local capital Makhachkala. – (Reuters)

Security alert as memory tool found on street

MANCHESTER – British police were yesterday investigating the contents of a computer memory stick said to contain sensitive anti-terror material which was reportedly found in the street outside a police station.

The four-inch USB storage device was alleged to have contained more than 2,000 pages of confidential information, including strategies on combating terror attacks.

The stick was found by a 36-year-old businessman on a pavement outside the station in Stalybridge, Greater Manchester, the Daily Star newspaper said yesterday. – (PA)
