North's top judge outlines plans to build confidence in justice

The head of the Northern Ireland judiciary has outlined how he hopes to build confidence in the justice system following the devolution of powers to Stormont.

In a speech in Belfast yesterday to mark the beginning of the new law term, Sir Declan Morgan outlined the work undertaken by the judiciary and stressed the importance of openness and consultation. He also outlined how he and senior colleagues would seek improvements.

Pointing to the more than 100,000 cases dealt with in the previous legal year, he recognised “the outstanding work of all my judicial colleagues in dealing with the workload of this quantity”. Arriving at correct decisions in so many cases should help build public confidence in the justice system.

E.coli outbreak in nursery in North

The North's Public Health Agency is investigating an outbreak of E.coli 0157 at a nursery near Lurgan, Co Armagh, which has left 12 children sick. The Holly House nursery was closed as a result of the outbreak. The agency said none of the children was seriously ill.


Dr Neil Irvine, consultant in health protection at the agency said, "The nursery remains closed and all appropriate infection control measures are being taken and the parents of children who attend the nursery have been contacted and advised of the situation and what they should do."

Bord na Móna workers end strike

An unofficial strike by Bord na Móna workers in Co Longford ended yesterday.


Eighteen workers agreed to return to their jobs of transporting peat to the Lough Ree power station.

This followed a meeting between unions, management and the striking workers. Bord na Móna welcomed the return to work.

More than 20 workers had returned to work on Friday.

Forty workers were suspended two weeks ago after they took unofficial action. The action was over overtime payments during a period when the station was closed for repairs.

Woman driver (39) dies in Delvin crash

A 39-year-old woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Co Westmeath yesterday. She was the driver of an SUV which collided with an articulated truck at about 2pm on the N52 Clonmellon Road at Robinstown, Delvin.


She was the only occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar. The truck driver did not need hospital treatment. The road was closed for a Garda examination. Gardaí appealed for witnesses to contact Mullingar Garda station on 044-938 4000.
