Search for Irishman missing from trawler off Queensland
A search is continuing off the coast of Queensland for an Irishman who fell overboard from a trawler on Friday, writes Padraig Collins.
"We're continuing with searches today, focusing on land masses and islands," a spokeswoman for Queensland police told The Irish Times.
The man’s name has not been released but the authorities in Australia have been in contact with his family in Ireland.
The man, a 21-year-old backpacker, was reportedly on his first fishing trip when he fell from a trawler sometime between 5pm and 7pm on Friday. The boat, The Guiding Star, was fishing in seas northeast of the town of Mackay.
Local police said at least an hour passed before any crew members noticed the man was missing. The man arrived in Australia on a working holiday visa a month ago.
Garda appeal on missing man (72)
Gardaí are trying to trace a man missing since last Tuesday.
Edward Murphy (72), Swilly Road, Cabra, Dublin, was last seen in the Phoenix Park on Tuesday. He was wearing a brown jacket, a wine jumper, blue jeans and white runners. He is 5ft 7in, of thin build, with grey thinning hair and grey/blue eyes.

Man questioned on murder in 2000
Gardaí last night continued to question a 40-year-old Waterford city man in connection with the murder of a man more than a decade ago.
Detectives are interviewing the man in connection with the death of Waterford native Martin Nolan (34) in 2000.
He was arrested on Thursday, and brought to the District Court on Saturday evening to have his period of detention extended.
Water-filtration at Ennis plant fails
Fire brigade vehicles and water tankers were drafted in to transport hundreds of thousands of litres of water to a new water treatment plant in Ennis after a mechanical failure.
The plant was unable to process the required amount of water after its water- filtration system got blocked.
The affected areas include large parts of Ennis as well as Clarecastle, Barefield, Crusheen and Spancilhill.
50,000 attend Waterford festival
About 50,000 people attended the Waterford Harvest Festival city over the weekend.
The first weekend of the festival, which started on Friday and continues until Sunday next, attracted visitors to the food stalls on the quays.
A picnic with Mayor Cllr Mary Roche at The People’s Park had children’s workshops on African drumming, sports and crafts.
