Gunman kills five in Kentucky before turning gun on himself
KENTUCKY – A gunman in rural eastern Kentucky killed five people with a shotgun yesterday before turning the weapon on himself.
The killings took place in a trailer park in the Mount Carmel community outside Jackson at about 11.35am, Kentucky State Police and Breathitt County authorities said.
The shooting appeared to be a domestic situation.
Sheriff Ray Clemons and state trooper Jody Sims said it was too soon to release the names of the shooter or his victims. Breathitt County is in the rugged eastern part of the state, almost 90 miles southeast of Lexington. – (PA)
Rival presidential supporters clash
CONAKRY– Dozens of supporters of Guinea's presidential hopefuls clashed in the streets of the capital yesterday, underscoring rising tensions ahead of a September 19th run-off vote.
Witnesses said police used tear gas to disperse crowds.
The clashes come amid criticism of a court decision last week to jail two senior officials from the election commission who were accused of meddling with the results of the first round of voting in June – (Reuters)
At least eight killed in Dagestan
MOSCOW – Gunmen shot dead a senior security official in Russia's troubled Northern Caucasus Republic of Dagestan as he drove to work in the capital, Makhachkala, yesterday.
In a separate incident, police killed at least seven militants during a security operation, local agencies reported.
The deaths occurred three days after an explosion killed at least 16 people in a marketplace in neighbouring North Ossetia. – (Reuters)
