Taiwan reeling after typhoon
TAIWAN – Typhoon Fanapi brought havoc to Taiwan yesterday, injuring 45 people, causing flights to be cancelled and disrupting power to thousands.
In the latest weather-related disruption in the region, winds of 162km/h sent scooters flying, broke windows and felled street signs and trees on the self-ruled island, officials said. The typhoon registered three on a scale of one to five. Rainfall in Yilan and Hualien counties had exceeded 200mm since Fanapi made landfall in Hualien in the morning, the island’s meteorological department said.
Four killed in German shootout
BERLIN – Four people have been killed after a woman opened fire in the southern German town of Loerrach.
Police said shots were first heard yesterday after an explosion in an apartment block in central Loerrach. Shortly afterwards, an armed woman ran out.
She entered the nearby St Elisabethen-Krankenhaus hospital and fired off several rounds. She was shot and killed in an exchange of fire with police. Two people were killed inside the hospital and the bodies of a woman and a girl were found in the house. – (Reuters)
