Man in his 70s dies following two-car collision in Longford
A MAN in his 70s died following a two-car crash at Carrickboy, Co Longford, yesterday.
Gardaí in Granard, Co Longford are investigating the crash which took place on the Ballymahon to Edgeworthstown Road at around 4.30pm.
Two people were injured in the crash and taken to Mullingar hospital, where the male driver of one car was pronounced dead. Injuries to the driver of the second car, a 46-year-old woman, were not life-threatening.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Granard Garda station on 043 6687660.
Veteran honours friend's bravery
A veteran of Ireland's peacekeeping mission in the Congo has spoken of his efforts to commemorate a friend's bravery by chronicling how exactly he died while serving with the Irish contingent in Katanga province almost half a century ago, writes Barry Roche.
John O’Mahony has teamed up with journalist, Ralph Riegel, to tell the story of his close friend, Trooper Patrick Mullins (18), from Kilbehenny, on the Cork Limerick border, who was killed in the Congo in 1961.
M an arrested after Cork arson threat
Gardaí in Cork last night arrested a man after he chained himself to some furniture in a restaurant in the city centre and threatened to burn himself and the building.
The man entered the Istanbul restaurant on Oliver Plunkett Street at around 5.15pm with three other men.
Gardaí were called and persuaded the three men to leave.
The situation was resolved just before 8.30pm when the fourth man gave himself up and was arrested by gardaí. He was taken to the Bridewell Garda station for questioning.
