Six held over alleged burning of Koran
LONDON – A security expert warned yesterday that the alleged burning of two Korans in northern England risked endangering British troops and making Britain more of a terrorist target.
Police have arrested six men over the apparent burning of the Muslim holy book behind a pub in Gateshead, northeast England, on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the United States.
Police refused to say whether those arrested were connected to the far right English Defence League.

Senior Farc chief killed in army raid
BOGOTA – Top Colombian rebel commander Mono Jojoy has been killed in a military raid on his jungle camp in one of the biggest blows against Latin America’s oldest insurgency, the government said yesterday.
The strike is a political and military victory for President Juan Manuel Santos, who came to office in August vowing to keep up a hard line with the guerrillas.
The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or Farc, is at its weakest in decades after eight years of a US- backed security campaign. – (Reuters)
Nicaraguan consul had throat slashed
NEW YORK – Nicaragua’s consul in New York was found dead with his throat slashed in a Bronx apartment yesterday during the UN General Assembly, officials said.
Cesar Mercado (34) was posted in New York, working out of an office building near the UN headquarters in Manhattan.
An emergency medical team responding to a call found him dead upon arrival at the apartment, a police spokeswoman said.
A police statement said he suffered a laceration to the neck. – (Reuters)
