Developer 'disappointed' at planning refused for hospital
Property developer Owen O'Callaghan has expressed "bitter disappointment" at the refusal by An Bord Pleanála to grant planning permission for an €80 million, 93-bed private hospital on Lancaster Quay on the Western Road in Cork, writes Barry Roche.
The board ruled against the hospital on flooding concerns, even though it recognised the site did not flood last year.
O’Callaghan Properties said “even in the midst of the most cataclysmic weather conditions” in November 2009, the site did not flood and this was recognised by An Bord Pleanála.
Prized innovators open youth cafe
A year of fundraising, planning and organisation came to fruition for the winners of this year's Young Social Innovators competition when they officially opened a youth cafe in their home village of Blarney, Co Cork, at the weekend.
Transition year students at Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál in Blarney scooped first prize last May when the judges deemed their plan to open a youth cafe "an exceptional project".
Food competition for southeast
A food innovation competition has been announced for food businesses in the southeast. The best proposal for an original food or drinks business idea will win a prize worth €25,000.
The competition, which is sponsored by An Bord Bia and the southeast county and city enterprise boards, is open to food businesses in Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford, Carlow Wexford.
