Garda pleads not guilty to assault

A jury in the trial of a garda accused of beating a suspect has been told they will see CCTV footage of the scene of arrest in the coming days.

The jury also heard that several Garda witnesses will be called as prosecution witnesses later in the trial. Garda Gerard Curtis (23), Ardee, Co Louth, has pleaded not guilty to assault and assault causing harm to John Paul Maughan (19), on Alexandra Road in the Dublin Docks on July 11th, 2009. Mr Maughan was a passenger in a stolen car and was allegedly assaulted following a high-speed chase through the city centre.

Vincent Stokes, a security officer for Dublin Port, gave evidence that he was on duty that night and recorded the chase on some of the 114 CCTV cameras at the docks.

He told Maurice Coffey, prosecuting, that he saw the stolen car crash in the Alexander Basin area as it was been chased by gardaí. He said he then used the camera to zoom in on the scene which was recorded to a hard drive. The trial continues before Judge Donagh McDonagh and a jury of nine women and three men.

Irish youth boxer given six-year term for cannabis possession

An Irish youth boxer caught with cannabis valued at almost €70,000 has been given a six-year sentence by Judge Katherine Delahunt at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Bernard Redmond (21), who has boxed in international competitions, agreed to move the drugs “from A to B” when he was unable to keep up payments to a drug dealer for a motorbike he had bought from them for €700.

Redmond, Kiltalawn Road, Tallaght, pleaded guilty to possession of the drugs for sale or supply in Dolphins Barn on March 29th, 2008. The judge adjourned sentencing in February to allow him complete a sports coach training course. The final four years were suspended on strict conditions.

Mayo murder trial to begin tomorrow

A man accused of murdering a father of two in Mayo just over a year ago is due to go on trial at the Central Criminal Court tomorrow.

Fintan McKenna (24), of Woodlands, Balla, Castlebar has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Francis Heneghan (24), in Kiltimagh on August 12th, last year. Mr Heneghan, a construction worker from Ballyheane outside Castlebar, died after being stabbed during an altercation. A jury of nine men and three women has been sworn in for the trial which is expected to take over a week.

Man guilty of managing brothels

A 39-year-old man is to be sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for his role in managing brothels in cities around the country. Aidan Dorney (39), Chelmsford Road, Ranelagh, Dublin, pleaded guilty to managing brothels at Camden Court, Cork; Mount Kennett Park, Limerick; and Salthill, Galway on dates between April 12th and 21st, 2009.

He also pleaded guilty to permitting premises to be used as brothels at The Oaks, Herbert Park, Dublin, between January 11th and 27th, 2007 and Seaview Court, Galway on May 24th, 2007.
