Company to be sentenced in relation to employee's death

A Dublin waste disposal company is to be sentenced in relation to charges arising out of the death of an employee.

Pádraic Thornton Waste Disposal pleaded guilty through a director Paul Thornton to failing to ensure appropriate barriers were provided at a work premises in Labre Park, Killeen Road, Dublin 10 on or about March 1st, 2007, as a consequence of which an employee, Jarleth O’Reilly, died. The company, trading as Thornton Recycling, has an address at Henry Road, Park West Business Park. Judge Desmond Hogan set a sentence date of January 25th.

Device helps with chemo drugs

An endoscopic device developed by an Irish research team which allows chemotherapeutic drugs be delivered in a more efficient and effective manner will be unveiled at a seminar in Dublin Convention Centre today.

The EndoVe was developed by Cork Cancer Research Centre at University College Cork and is designed to help in the treatment of colorectal cancers and can be used in cases where patients have inoperable tumours.

Co-inventor, Dr Declan Soden of the Cork Cancer Research Centre said the device allows for chemotherapeutic drugs to be administered in a more localised way which will lead to shorter stays in hospitals. “The first clinical trial of our device involving a patient with inoperable colorectal cancer has been successful in eliminating the tumour,” said Dr Soden.

President hails city landmarks

Dublin’s new landmarks – concert halls, football stadiums, theatres and public squares – will endure long after the current economic difficulties pass, President Mary McAleese said yesterday at the opening of an international conference on world heritage in Dublin Castle.

Mrs McAleese said she was delighted Dublin was chosen for the meeting.

Gardaí investigate fatal house fire

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal house fire in south Co Dublin. A woman (44) died in the fire in Brownstown, near Newcastle. A spokesman for Dublin Fire Brigade said a number of children and another adult escaped the fire, which broke out at about 2.30am yesterday. The scene has been preserved by gardaí for a technical examination.
