Freed political prisoner to remain in Cuba
HAVANA - Cuba has freed one of 13 political prisoners who refused to go into exile and will let him stay on the island, in a signal that all may be released soon.
Arnaldo Ramos (68), an economist, said he was in good shape after more than seven years in prison and planned to resume his opposition to the communist- led government.
He was released and allowed to return to his home on Saturday night. -(Reuters)
Greek Socialists leading in elections
ATHENS - Greece's ruling Socialists were leading in a majority of regional run-off elections yesterday.
Turnout at 45 per cent was at a record low, an official estimate showed, as the deeply indebted country prepared for new austerity measures.
The government expects difficult talks with EU and IMF inspectors, who may want additional belt-tightening pledges from Athens when they begin an inspection visit today. - (Reuters)
