Lufthansa Technik staff accept deal

Staff at the Lufthansa Technik Airmotive Ireland plant in Co Dublin have voted to accept proposals on new work practices to save 465 jobs at the factory, writes Olivia Kelly.

In a ballot yesterday, workers voted by almost four to one to accept recommendations from the National Implementation Body that were agreed following 11 hours of talks between unions and management. The proposals relate to flexible work practices which would see cuts in overtime. The proposals are broadly similar to those rejected last week.

Garda admits leaking report

A serving member of the Garda has admitted to disclosing the contents of a confidential report almost three years ago.

Det Sgt Robert McNulty (50), of The Close, Boden Park, Rathfarnham, Dublin, has pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to the charge that between July 10th and August 10th, 2006, he disclosed the contents of the draft report into the Dean Lyons case without the consent of the Commission of Investigation.

Judge Patricia Ryan remanded Det Sgt McNulty on continuing bail to a date next month for sentencing.

Three die in two-car collision

Three people, including an elderly married couple returning from a dance, were killed in a two-car collision outside Cookstown, Co Tyrone, early yesterday, writes Gerry Moriarty Northern Editor.

Four others were injured in the accident. Peter Toner (78), and his wife Kathleen (67), from Keenaghan Road, Pomeroy, Co Tyrone, died in the collision at Drum Road about six miles from Cookstown shortly before 1am yesterday. They were passengers in a car that was returning from a local dance.

David Joel Marshall (19), from Doogary Road, Omagh, Co Tyrone, a passenger in the second car, also died.

Police in Cookstown have appealed for information about the accident involving a Ford Focus and a Citroen Picasso.

Horseman dies following fall

A professional Irish rider has died after falling at an eventing competition in Lincolnshire on Sunday. Ian Olding (47), of Carrickfergus, Co Antrim, died after a fall at a fence during the Belton horse trials.

Mr Olding, who was based in Sandbach in Cheshire, was riding in the advanced section of the trials.

Rape trial told of scream for help

The night porter of a Dublin hotel has told a jury that he found a woman lying naked and injured on the floor of a lift after he responded to a report that someone was screaming for help.

A 54-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has pleaded not guilty to rape, oral rape and sexual assault of the woman, whom he had met earlier that night in a pub on March 20th, 2007. He has pleaded guilty to assaulting the woman causing her harm.

The night porter told Pauline Walley SC, prosecuting, that he was at reception at about 2am when a guest from the fifth floor called to say someone was screaming. He told Ms Walley that as he approached the lift he found two women inside. He said one woman “was naked, in bad condition, and screaming all the time”.

The trial continues.

Mulder loses murder appeal

Anton Mulder, who is serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife Colleen at their home in Co Meath more than four years ago has lost his appeal against his conviction. Mulder (47) of Maelduin, Dunshaughlin, is originally from Durban, South Africa, His wife, a native of Bangor, Co Down. was found strangled to death on December 17th, 2004.
