Priest stands aside during inquiry
A priest has stood aside voluntarily from his position in a Dublin parish “as a result of information giving rise to child protection concerns”, the Catholic Archbishop of Dublin Dr Diarmuid Martin has confirmed.
In a statement yesterday, the Archbishop said it was “a matter of regret and concern that one Sunday newspaper chose to publish details of a priest standing aside” and he hoped “this decision would not in any way compromise a process which has the safety of children at its core”.
A statement from the archdiocese said the priest’s standing aside was normal procedure in inquiries of this type and did not “denote innocence or guilt”.
Talk on growing plants in space
An Irish scientist who was the principal investigator on missions that grew the first plants in space is to give a lecture tonight at Trinty College Dublin.
Louth-born Dr Anthony Heijenga, who will deliver Astronomy Ireland’s summer lecture, was involved with Nasa when they successfully grew shamrock plants on board the International Space Station in May 1996.
Print museum gets award
The National Print Museum is to become one of a handful of Irish museums to be awarded full museum accreditation by the Heritage Council.
The museum in Beggars Bush, Dublin, has been involved in the standardisation programme since 2002 and will receive the award next week.
“It’s been a long seven years of work,” said museum manager Maireád White.
The museum has artefacts relating to hot metal printing, early computers, newspapers and photographs.
Archbishop for EU meeting on crisis
Catholic Archbishop of Dublin Dr Diarmuid Martin has been invited by José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, to take part in a meeting of 20 leaders of different churches and faith groups in Brussels this morning.
The meeting, on ethical issues in the current financial crisis, will take place at the commission headquarters.
