Two charged with IRA membership
Two Cork men arrested as part of the Garda inquiry into the laundering of money from the Northern Bank raid in Belfast in which £26.5 million (€29.7 million) was stolen in December 2004 were charged with IRA membership at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin yesterday.
Tom Hanlon (42), of Pembroke Row, Passage West and George Hegarty (62),of Donnybrook Cottages, Douglas were charged with IRA membership on February 16th, 2005. Both were remanded on bail until June 23rd.
Drugs case ‘will take some time’
The case against a man aged 24 who faces a drugs charge in relation to the death of model Katy French in December 2007 could take time, Trim Circuit Criminal Court was told yesterday.
Russell Memery, of Yellow Clay Manor, Navan, was charged on foot of the Garda investigation into her death.
It is alleged that on December 1st, 2007, at the Statoil station, Bracetown, Clonee, Co Meath, he conspired with persons not in court to possess a controlled drug to supply to another. The drug was cocaine.
Mr Memery’s barrister Kevin Segrave said the case “relates in broad terms to a conspiracy charge” and “will take some time”. Judge Michael O’Shea adjourned until October 27th and remanded Mr Memery on continuing bail.
Extradition over killing sought
The High Court has remanded in custody a man whose extradition is being sought by UK authorities in connection with the shooting dead of a soldier in England more than 17 years ago.
The UK seeks to extradite Anthony Patrick Gorman (39), originally from Co Armagh but with an address at Bailieborough, Co Cavan.
The UK claims Mr Gorman, on April 13th, 1992, murdered Sgt Michael Newman (34) in Derby. He is also charged with conspiracy to commit murder between January 1st and April 13th, 1992.
Mr Justice Michael Peart yesterday remanded Mr Gorman in custody, pending application for bail, to appear later this month.
Theft conspiracy trial date set
A trial date has been set for three men facing charges of conspiracy to commit theft at Tesco in Co Kildare.
Joseph Warren (27), Belclare Crescent, Ballymun; Jeffrey Morrow (26), Hazlecroft Road, and Eamon Dunne (33) Dunsoughly Drive, Ratoath Road, both Finglas, will face trial in March 2010.
Arraignment was set for three co-accused next month: Alan Bradley (35), Churchfields, Kentstown, Co Meath; Wayne Bradley (30), Ratoath Road, Finglas, and Michael Ryan (35), Carton Drive, Poppintree, Ballymun. All six are charged with conspiring to commit theft of cash at Tesco, Shackleton Road, Celbridge on November 2nd, 2007.
Four years for drunken assault
A Lithuanian who fractured his friend’s skull in a drunken assault received a four-year jail sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
The victim would not accept Leonid Starozilov (42) was his assailant until he saw CCTV footage. Starozilov, of Hammond Lane, Smithfield, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm at Harbourmaster Place, IFSC, on August 11th, 2006. Judge Katherine Delahunt imposed a four-year term, suspending nine months.
