Elderly man dies after he is hit by bus
An elderly man was killed yesterday when he was struck by a bus in Dublin city centre. The man in his 70s was struck by a private bus near the pedestrian Millennium Bridge on Ormond Quay in Dublin’s north city centre at around 3.45pm. The quays between Ormond Quay and Capel Street were closed yesterday evening causing heavy traffic throughout the city centre.
Earlier, a 44-year-old woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash near Macroom, Co Cork yesterday. The woman was the only occupant of the car which crashed into a tree at Shandangan, Carrigadrohid at 1.35pm. She has been named as Martina O’Driscoll from Ovens, Co Cork.
Arnold wins medal for achievements
The Institute of Management Consultants and Advisers yesterday presented its annual medal for outstanding achievement in management to Tom Arnold of Concern Worldwide and Dr Steve Collins of Valid International. The first joint award of the medal marked what the institute described as an "innovative and highly effective collaborative approach to managing acute malnutrition in the developing world".
Medical check for ill family on flight
A number of passengers were held for medical examination on a flight which arrived at Dublin airport from Paris last night. It is understood that they were members of a family who had started their journey in Mexico and became ill on the approach to landing.
The Air France/CityJet flight from Dublin to Paris was delayed by 30 minutes. A Dublin Airport Authority spokeswoman confirmed that all passengers were held on the aircraft.
They were allowed to disembark while the family was kept on board for a medical examination.
Charges brought over murder
A 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a Polish national in Co Down.
The victim, who was 26, was found dead shortly before midnight on Tuesday at an address in Balfour Street in Newtownards.
He had been living at the terraced house for some months, and has yet to be formally identified. It is not yet known how he died.
