Man guilty of running brothel

A Dublin man has been convicted of running a city centre brothel which was targeted in a Garda investigation into organised criminal prostitution called Quest, set up in 2005.

Martin Morgan (44) was found guilty by a jury at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court of organising prostitution and running a brothel at a Bachelors Walk apartment on dates from August 22nd to October 10th, 2005.

Judge Frank O'Donnell remanded him in custody for sentencing later. Morgan, formerly of Herbert Road, Blanchardstown and with an address at Blackstock Road, London, denied three charges at the start of his 18-day trial. Judge O'Donnell withdrew the third charge that Morgan allowed the apartment to be used for prostitution on the same dates and directed the jury to return a "not guilty" verdict on it.

Morgan was arrested when gardaí raided the Bachelors Walk apartment on October 10th, 2005.

Man jailed after death of friend

A north Dublin man has been jailed for a year by Judge Martin Nolan for dangerous driving causing the death of one of his closest friends when racing another car in Lusk two years ago.

Keith Barry (25), Ministers Road, Lusk, was racing another car on the Old Belfast Road when his car hit a wall, seriously injuring his front-seat passenger, Paul Callaghan (24), who died in hospital two weeks later.

Barry pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to dangerous driving causing the death on March 27th, 2006.

Man who held drugs jailed

A "withdrawn and vulnerable" alcoholic who agreed to hold over €1 million of cocaine and heroin in return for €500 has been jailed for six years by Judge Martin Nolan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Joseph McClean (63), Tonlegee Avenue, Coolock, pleaded guilty to possession of the drugs at his home for sale or supply on March 16th, 2006.

Judge Nolan said McClean was a "vulnerable character who was exploited to a degree by people with superior cunning and criminal minds".

Man jailed for robbery attempt

A plasterer who was extradited from England last summer for the botched armed robbery of a rural post office has received a six-year prison sentence at Galway Circuit Criminal Court.

John Ryan (35), from Brownsgrove, Tuam, Co Galway, with an address at Emerson Avenue, Salthill, Galway, pleaded guilty to entering Barnadearg post office, Tuam, with intent to rob on March 22nd, 2002, and having a firearm.

Woman claims rape 'set-up'

A Galway woman who alleges she was raped by a neighbour in a field in 1972 has claimed at the Central Criminal Court that she may have been "set up" by the accused man's mother.

She alleged at the age of 12 she was told to go down to a field with the man by his mother to look for the cattle even though she knew there were no animals there.

The 57-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to two counts of raping the woman in 1972 and 1979, and to one count of indecently assaulting her in 1971.
